Antonio Vivaldi
Concerto in D major
-Allegro giusto
-Largo
-Allegro

The younger Vivaldi was trained for the priesthood at S. Geminiano and at S. Giovanni in Oleo, taking the tonsure on Sept. 18, 1693, and Holy Orders on March 23, 1703. Because of his red hair he was called "il prete rosso" ("the red priest"). Vivaldi's greatness lies mainly in his superb instrumental works, most notably some 500 concertos, in which he displayed an extraordinary mastery of ritornello form and of orchestration. The original MS of the Concerto in D major for guitar, strings and basso continuo is in Turin. As usual, the movements are headed Allegro-Largo-Allegro. In the first movement there is a striking contrast between the half capricious, half serious first subject and the airy, chromatically ascending second subject. In the middle movement the solo guitar savours to the full a lovely melodic line above string chords, while the last movement is a fitting Finale in every way.
